Mancebo and three others broke into U.S. Postal Service mailboxes around Bergen, Hudson and Morris counties between 2018 and 2019 to steal envelopes that contained checks, officials said. They then conspired to deposit the checks into their own bank accounts and withdrew the funds, authorities said.

The three alleged co-conspirators, Miguel Ortiz, 22, Victor Emilio Mejia Adames, 21, and Tiffany Diaz Fermin, 24, all Paterson residents, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud in April 2021.

Ortiz was sentenced to 17 months in prison in November 2021. As part of his sentence, he was also subject to three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay $113,987 in restitution and forfeiture.
